Using Custom LUTs (Lookup Tables)
Custom LUTs can be loaded into ARRI cameras to enable immediate previews of the image on set. A LUT is a tool for checking an image's color and contrast during filming. In professional productions, directors and cinematographers prepare LUTs that match the look they aim to achieve in post-production, then apply them to the camera for previewing.
This makes it easier to visualize the image after post-production while shooting on set, improving accuracy and efficiency. ARRI cameras can also store multiple LUTs, allowing quick switching to suit different scenes and lighting conditions.
Synchronizing Multi-Camera Shoots
ARRI cameras also offer excellent support for multi-camera shoots. Films and large-scale video productions often use several cameras simultaneously, making timecode synchronization important. ARRI cameras can synchronize the timecodes of all cameras using external timecode generators or synchronization cables.
This feature makes it easy to link footage from different cameras during editing, helping complex multi-camera productions proceed smoothly. Using the same timecode also makes it easy to synchronize picture and sound.
Lens Metadata and Focus Control
ARRI cameras can record lens metadata. This automatically saves information such as the focal length, aperture, and focus distance of the lens used, which can be applied in post-production and VFX. In productions involving VFX in particular, this metadata significantly improves the accuracy of CGI and compositing work.
ARRI's wireless focus system also allows remote focus control. A focus puller, the technician who operates focus, can therefore maintain precise focus throughout filming without approaching the camera body.
