Basic Preparation and Settings
Photographing or filming fireworks requires appropriate equipment and settings. For still photography, a tripod is essential to prevent camera shake and support long exposures. When using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, choose manual mode and set a low ISO, usually around 100-400. Set the aperture to approximately f/8-f/11 and adjust shutter speed between four and ten seconds. This allows you to capture fireworks trails beautifully. A tripod is important for video too, but shutter speed is usually set to 1/50 or 1/60 of a second. Adjust ISO to the conditions while keeping it as low as possible to limit noise.
Composition and Focusing Techniques
Composition is important for beautiful fireworks photographs. Check the launch location in advance and plan a composition that includes the surrounding scenery. Reflections on the water or city lights can make the photograph more striking. Prefocus on the location where the fireworks are expected to appear. Manual focus set near infinity is often effective. For video, panning or zooming to follow the fireworks can create more dynamic footage. However, excessive movement may confuse viewers, so use it carefully. A wide-angle lens can also capture the entire fireworks display and the surrounding atmosphere together.
Post-Processing and Special Techniques
Editing after shooting is important too. For photographs, shooting in RAW is recommended because it makes fine adjustments to exposure and white balance easier. Moderately increasing contrast and saturation can make the fireworks' colors more vivid. Compositing multiple fireworks into one photograph is also popular; one method is to layer several photographs taken with the same composition. In video editing, adding slow motion can show the beautiful unfolding of fireworks in greater detail. Time-lapse is another effective approach, condensing an entire evening's display into a few minutes. For audio, using a high-quality microphone to record the fireworks and audience cheers is recommended to convey the atmosphere on location. Finally, in either medium, maintaining a consistent tone and mood throughout the work produces a more impressive result.
