Yuya Ishii’s Journey: Applying Everyday Character Portrayal to Corporate Videos

A Childhood That Nurtured a Passion for Cinema

映画への情熱を育んだ少年時代

Born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1983 and raised in Urawa, Saitama Prefecture, Yuya Ishii had a strong interest in creating stories from childhood. He began writing fiction in junior high school and joined the literature club in high school. The many films he watched during this period would greatly influence his later creative work as a director. In particular, the films of Yasujiro Ozu and Mikio Naruse, which he encountered in high school, became the origins of his present style of depicting small everyday events and the subtleties of relationships.

Discovering Filmmaking and the Blossoming of Talent

Ishii entered the Department of Cinema at Nihon University’s College of Art and energetically produced independent films while studying. His student film Bare-assed Japan won the Grand Prix at the 2007 Pia Film Festival, making a powerful impact on the film world. The talent he demonstrated at university brought attention to him as a young director, and his distinctive perspective and directing style won high praise.

A Turning Point Through Setbacks and Struggles

挫折と苦悩を経た転換期

His path as a director was far from smooth, however. His commercial debut, Sawako Decides, received high praise from critics but struggled at the box office. The experience greatly affected Ishii and prompted him to reconsider his filmmaking. During this period, he began searching for ways to reach more people’s hearts, becoming determined to incorporate more universal storytelling methods alongside his earlier experimental style.

Establishing Himself as an Individual Artist

独自の表現者としての確立

He subsequently succeeded in combining his distinctive perspective with universal themes in films such as The Great Passage and Our Family. The Great Passage, in particular, transformed the seemingly unglamorous subject of dictionary compilation into a compelling human drama, capturing many viewers’ hearts. Today, he has established a firm position as one of Japan’s leading directors and is an influential presence among young filmmakers. Human dramas that resonate across generations and direction attentive to every detail have become his trademarks, and he is expected to continue helping lead Japanese cinema.
