The Birth and Innovation of Motion Tweening

In the late 1970s, an innovative technology called motion tweening developed in Japanese animation. It made in-betweening between keyframes more efficient and enabled smoother movement. In particular, the animation system developed by Toei Doga, now Toei Animation, marked a major step in animation history as the world's first fully fledged motion tweening system put into practical use. This technology enabled unprecedentedly fluid movement in works such as Galaxy Express 999 and Space Battleship Yamato.
Evolution and Adoption in the Digital Age

In the 1990s, motion tweening advanced substantially as computer processing power increased. The production of Neon Genesis Evangelion, in particular, combined traditional hand-drawn animation with digital motion tweening to create distinctive visual effects. This Japanese-origin technology was implemented in software such as Adobe Flash (now Adobe Animate), offering animators around the world new expressive possibilities. During this period, motion tweening came to be recognized as an important tool for combining efficiency with artistry.
Influence and Development in Animation Overseas

From the 2000s onward, Japanese motion tweening technology began having a major influence on animation production abroad. American animated works such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and Steven Universe actively adopted Japanese-style motion tweening. This created a new form of animation combining the squash-and-stretch movement characteristic of American animation with the delicate movement distinctive to Japanese anime. European animation studios, including those in France and Spain, have also increasingly incorporated this Japanese-origin technology into their productions.
Integration with Next-Generation Technologies and Future Prospects

Today, motion tweening is increasingly being combined with the latest technologies, including AI and real-time motion capture. The Spider-Verse series established an entirely new visual style by combining traditional motion tweening with computer graphics. Japanese-origin motion tweening has now become a global standard in animation production and is making a major contribution to the development of next-generation expressive techniques. Integration with VR and AR is expected to open further possibilities, as the expression of movement in animation approaches a new era of innovation.
