Film Director Hideyuki Hirayama: His Journey and Passion for Cinema

Childhood and the Discovery of Film

Hideyuki Hirayama was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in 1950. He is said to have developed a strong interest in cinema from childhood and visited local theaters constantly. Influenced deeply by foreign as well as Japanese films, he was fascinated by the diversity of visual expression. His family’s influence also helped nurture a deep love of cinema.

Youthful Ambitions to Enter the Film Industry

After finishing high school, Hirayama moved to Tokyo to study film and learned video production at university. As a student, he made independent films and immersed himself in expression through moving images. During this period, he built relationships with many people in cinema and strengthened his determination to become a director.

Building His Abilities as an Assistant Director

After graduating from university, Hirayama entered the film industry as an assistant director. Working under leading Japanese filmmakers such as Shohei Imamura, he gained experience and honed practical knowledge and skills on set. The filming techniques and directing methods he learned as an assistant significantly influenced his later films.

His Directorial Debut and Subsequent Career

In 1990, Hirayama made his directorial debut with Maria’s Stomach. Despite being a debut, its delicate character portrayals and realism won praise and attracted attention in the film industry. He went on to create distinctive works across a broad range of genres, including School Ghost Stories and Begging for Love, establishing a firm place in Japanese cinema.
