Childhood in a Regional Town: The Beginnings of Creativity

Go Shibata was born in 1975 in a small town in Tohoku. He came from an ordinary salaried household, with both parents working at local small and medium-sized companies. Curious from an early age, he particularly loved making things and drawing. At his local elementary school, art and craft lessons were his greatest pleasure, and teachers praised his dexterity and creativity. Yet the limited environment of a rural town offered few opportunities to develop that creativity fully. Even so, he nurtured his own sensibility through inspiration from surrounding nature and ordinary everyday scenes. His parents recognized his talent but strongly believed he should find a stable occupation and were skeptical about seriously pursuing art.
Youthful Setbacks and Exploration: Searching for Himself

After high school, Shibata met others' expectations by enrolling in engineering at a local national university. However, he struggled with theory-centered study and gradually lost interest in university life. In his second year, a chance encounter with a photography club rekindled his passion for visual expression. He became so absorbed in club activities that his studies suffered, at one point putting him at risk of repeating a year. During this period, he began thinking deeply about his future: should he abandon engineering and enter photography and film? In his final year, with graduation approaching, he made a major decision to join a Tokyo video production company afterward. He chose this despite his family's opposition, firmly determined to make a living doing what he loved.
Challenges and Turning Points: The Road to Professionalism

Life in Tokyo was harder than he had imagined. Video production was intensely competitive, and as a newcomer he had to begin with basic tasks. Gradually, however, his sincere attitude and distinctive perspective gained recognition. An unexpected opportunity arose on a project in his third year at the company: when the director suddenly fell ill, Shibata was entrusted with shooting a commercial in their place. Under pressure, he clearly communicated his vision and created an innovative work within limited time and budget. The commercial attracted industry attention and suddenly made his name known. Behind that success, however, he felt limits to his expression. Seeking greater creative freedom, he decided to become independent before turning thirty.
Growth and Prospects: Toward a Creative Future

After becoming independent, Shibata expanded beyond conventional video production. His combination of digital technology and traditional visual expression gained acclaim at festivals in Japan and abroad. Documentaries examining social issues from a distinctive perspective moved many people in particular. Today, he also focuses on developing young creators. Believing that creativity is strongly shaped by environment, he launched a project offering opportunities to young people from diverse backgrounds, including regional areas. Passing on the joy of creation he felt as a child is now a major goal. His journey teaches us the importance of living faithfully to our passions and continuing to take on challenges.
