Growing Up in Onomichi and Discovering Film

Director Nobuhiko Obayashi was born in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, in 1938. Growing up among historic streets and the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea, he developed a strong interest in film from an early age. His encounter with his father's 8 mm camera marked the beginning of his creative work. As he filmed landscapes and family members, he discovered the appeal of recording time through moving images.

His Student Years and Passion for Visual Experimentation

Obayashi began making independent films in high school and remained immersed in experimental filmmaking after entering university. During his student years in Tokyo, he formed relationships with a variety of artists and filmmakers and explored avant-garde visual expression. His work using physical manipulation of film and special effects attracted attention, and he began establishing his own perspective on cinema.

Success as a Commercial Director

After graduating from university, Obayashi founded a video production company and became a successful commercial director. His innovative visuals had a major influence on the advertising industry at the time. By actively incorporating techniques such as slow motion and chroma-key compositing, he established a style that attracted viewers through the appeal of the images themselves, not just the products.

Moving into Theatrical Features and the Impact of HOUSE

In 1977, Obayashi released his first theatrical feature, HOUSE, shocking audiences. Its distinctive visual techniques and surreal story developments divided opinion but brought a fresh perspective to Japanese cinema. Beginning with this film, he established himself as a feature-film director and went on to release numerous classics, including his Onomichi trilogy.
