Kazuya Shiraishi is a film director born in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, in 1974. His career began with independent filmmaking. He became interested in making films while at university and, after graduating and gaining experience at a video production company, struck out on his own to make independent films.
Lost Paradise in Tokyo (2010) portrays young people living on the hidden side of Tokyo. Its socially engaged perspective and realistic depiction gradually brought Shiraishi's name to the attention of the film world. From these early stages, his work consistently showed a strong interest in people on society's margins and a determination to depict their lives as they are.
Venturing into Commercial Film and Gaining Recognition
Shiraishi became widely known with The Devil's Path in 2013. Based on a true story, the film received high praise at festivals in Japan and abroad, earning Japan Academy Film Prize nominations for Picture of the Year and Director of the Year, among others. It became an opportunity for his talent to receive broad recognition.
The success of The Devil's Path established Shiraishi as an auteur with his own perspective and expressive style, beyond his role as a commercial filmmaker. In particular, his way of revealing the darkness of contemporary society through violence and crime became an important characteristic of his work.

In Twisted Justice (2016), he explored the internal structure and psychology of a real-life fraud ring. Dare to Stop Us (2018) told a story of renewal among young people released from juvenile detention. In The Blood of Wolves series (2018 and 2021), he breathed new life into the traditional police drama genre, earning acclaim from many viewers and critics.
