Mac Storage Full? How to Review Caches, Large Files and Duplicates

A “storage almost full” warning on a Mac is not always caused by photos or videos alone. Caches, temporary development files, exports from completed projects, and duplicate assets can accumulate. Before deleting anything, identify which files are safe to remove.

Check What Is Using Storage

In macOS, open System Settings, choose General, then Storage to review broad categories such as Documents and Applications. Separate active projects and irreplaceable originals from downloads you can retrieve again. In video workflows, proxies, render caches, and exports can consume substantial disk space.

Back Up Important Work First

Keep copies of original footage, editing projects, photo libraries, and essential documents on another drive or service. Similar filenames do not always mean files are interchangeable. Avoid bulk-deleting unfamiliar system folders.

Four Categories Worth Reviewing

  1. Large files: Inspect old exports, installers, and downloaded assets. Decide based on whether you still need each file, not just its size.
  2. Duplicates: Different filenames can contain identical data, and identically named files can contain different data. Review the actual content and choose which copy to keep.
  3. Caches, logs, and temporary files: Some can be regenerated, but removing them may require an application to reprocess or download data.
  4. Development and editing data: Xcode DerivedData and similar working files can grow over time. Removing them may trigger rebuilding or other follow-up work.

Choosing a Storage Cleanup Tool

A useful cleanup tool should show what it intends to remove and explain how it identifies duplicates. Recoverable space depends on your files and workflow; no tool can guarantee a specific amount or automatic speed improvement.

Our Sweepline for Mac is a one-time-purchase macOS utility for reviewing cleanup candidates, large files, and SHA-256-based duplicate-file detection. It lets you review candidates before moving deletions to the Trash. It supports macOS 14 Sonoma or later on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. See the features, requirements, and purchase details.

Keep Storage Manageable

Storage fills up again as new projects begin. Make a habit of distinguishing final deliverables, original source materials, and intermediate data that can be recreated. See also our guide to SSD and HDD management in video production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is freeing memory the same as freeing disk space?
No. RAM and disk storage are different resources. If the disk is full, inspect storage usage first.

Should I delete every duplicate automatically?
No. Even identical content may be intentionally stored in multiple project locations. Back up and review before removing files.
