Born in Tokyo in 1963, director Murata (村田実映) was deeply interested in film from childhood and immersed himself in creative work early on, making independent films in high school. He majored in film at Tokyo University of the Arts and continued exploring distinctive visual expression throughout his studies.

Director Murata began making a name for himself in independent cinema in the early 1990s. His early film Eternal Promise (1992) received high praise at festivals in Japan and abroad, drawing attention to him as a standard-bearer for a new Japanese cinema. His sensitive portrayals of people and innovative visual beauty have earned support from audiences and critics alike.

In the 2000s, he won a Japan Academy Film Prize for Blue Memories (2003). Depicting the conflict between disappearing Japanese traditions and modern society, the film established his international reputation through deep human insight and poetic imagery. In his subsequent Beyond the Mist (2008), he attempted more experimental techniques and broke new ground in cinematic expression.
