Nagisa Oshima: The Journey of an Innovator Who Challenged Cinema
Childhood and the Influence of War

Born in Kyoto Prefecture in 1932, Nagisa Oshima experienced war as a child. His experiences during this period laid the foundation for his later anti-authoritarian style. Interested in literature and film from an early age, he searched for his own means of expression amid the postwar turmoil.
His Student Years and Interest in Film

At Kyoto University’s Faculty of Law, Oshima developed a strong interest in politics and social issues. He joined a film study society and deepened his understanding of visual expression by writing film criticism. During this period he began to view cinema as an important means of reflecting society, beyond entertainment alone.
Joining Shochiku and Taking His First Steps in Film

Oshima joined Shochiku in 1954, entering film production as an assistant director. At the time, Shochiku mainly produced traditional family films, but Oshima was dissatisfied with this framework and strongly wanted to make films from his own perspective.
His Directorial Debut and the Search for New Cinematic Expression

Oshima made his directorial debut with A Town of Love and Hope in 1959, attracting attention for his incisive portrayals of social issues. He continued introducing novel methods absent from conventional cinema in films such as Cruel Story of Youth, establishing his position as an innovator in Japanese film.
