The Dawn of Moving Images
The history of moving-image expression began in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In France, the Lumière brothers held the world's first film screening in 1895, ushering in the age of motion pictures. Short films such as Workers Leaving the Factory and Arrival of a Train captivated audiences with a new way of capturing moments from everyday life. Around the same time, Thomas Edison in the United States contributed to motion-picture technology with the Kinetoscope, a device for individual viewing. These pioneers helped transform moving images from a means of recording events into a form of artistic expression.
Developments in the Early Twentieth Century
Moving-image expression became more diverse and experimental in the twentieth century. Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein established montage theory, developing techniques that used editing to shape audiences' emotions. His landmark film Battleship Potemkin (1925) became a classic through its innovative editing. In France, the avant-garde film movement saw surrealists such as Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí create experimental works including Un Chien Andalou (1929). These films sought to express the unconscious and the world of dreams through moving images.
Developments After the Second World War
The spread of television after the Second World War further expanded the possibilities of moving images. Working in the United States, Nam June Paik used television sets as artistic materials and established the new field of video art. His Electronic Superhighway (1974), a large installation combining multiple television monitors, anticipated the arrival of the information society. In Japan, experimental film pioneer Toshio Matsumoto challenged established cinematic conventions in works such as Nishijin (1961) and For My Crushed Right Eye (1968). The experiments of these pioneers laid the groundwork for today's digital video technologies and interactive art, helping establish the diverse forms of moving-image expression we know today.
