1930年に長野県松本市で生まれた熊井啓は、戦後日本映画界において最も重要な社会派監督の一人として知られている。その生涯は、日本の暗い歴史に光を当て、社会の不正義に立ち向かう強靭な精神に貫かれていた。早稲田大学政治経済学部を卒業した後、当初は記録映画の世界で助監督や脚本家として活動を開始した彼は、1960年代後半から劇映画の演出に取り組み始め、1970年に監督デビューを果たすこととなった。
