ミネリはミュージカル映画で、物語と音楽・ダンス場面をシームレスにつなげることに長けていました。多くのミュージカル映画ではストーリー進行が歌の場面で一時中断しがちですが、ミネリ作品では歌や踊りがドラマの延長線上に配置されることが多いです。例えば『若草の頃』では、家族が歌う「Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas」が登場人物の感情そのものを表現し、観客に登場人物の心情を伝える役割を果たします。
