Hirokazu Kore-eda's Journey: Bringing Family and Society into Corporate Videos

A Film Director with Documentary Roots

ドキュメンタリー出身の映画監督

Born in Tokyo in 1962, Hirokazu Kore-eda began his career as a documentary director at TV Man Union after graduating from Waseda University. His 1995 fiction feature debut, Maborosi, won the Golden Osella at the Venice International Film Festival, establishing a distinctive style combining documentary methods with delicate portrayals of people.

Recognition as a Master of Family Stories

家族を描く名手としての評価

The defining feature of Kore-eda's films is the depth of their stories about family. Nobody Knows (2004) portrays children abandoned by their mother, and its lead actor Yuya Yagira won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival. Still Walking (2008) quietly depicts misunderstandings between generations through a day in the life of a family gathering once a year, resonating with many viewers.

Growing International Recognition and Shoplifters

国際的評価の高まりと『万引き家族』

International recognition reached a peak when Shoplifters (2018) won the Palme d'Or, Cannes' highest honor. Its story of a family unrelated by blood sharply highlights poverty and social isolation while beautifully expressing human dignity and the possibilities of love. It received numerous awards, including the Japan Academy Film Prize for Best Film, and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Creative Work Expanding Across Borders

境界を越えて広がる創作活動

After winning the Palme d'Or, Kore-eda released The Truth in 2019, set in France and in which he co-starred with Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche, followed by the South Korea-set Broker in 2022. Successfully creating works across linguistic and cultural barriers, he has demonstrated internationally the universality of themes such as relationships and family. Audiences around the world continue watching Kore-eda with keen interest as he remains creatively active.
