Viewers could see team uniforms, natural scenery, and elaborate variety-show sets in realistic colors, greatly improving the quality of the television experience. Advertising also adopted this innovation: colorful commercials began appearing, and approaches aimed at creating visual impact became widespread.
Color televisions were still expensive at the time and took time to reach ordinary households. As television images evolved, however, viewers' expectations rose, and color broadcasts gradually became accessible in more homes. Color strengthened television's appeal as a visual medium, further expanding its role in entertainment and communication.
A New Horizon for Television Images: Digital Broadcasting and High Resolution
After decades of analog broadcasting, imaging technology underwent another major transformation with the introduction of digital broadcasting from the 1990s into the 2000s. The spread of digital technology dramatically improved resolution and color expression, taking the visual experience into a new dimension. Whereas analog broadcasts could suffer from signal degradation and noise, digital broadcasting made it possible to deliver clear, high-quality images consistently.
Digitization also brought high-resolution television broadcasts. The arrival of HD broadcasting opened an era in which people could enjoy beautiful images at home that had previously been available only in cinemas. As television resolution improved, films, sports broadcasts, and nature documentaries could offer more realistic imagery, allowing viewers to immerse themselves more deeply in the world on screen.
