Early in the filming of Forrest Gump, he felt that Hanks's performance in the lead role was not working. He decided to reshoot all of the first three days' footage and advised Hanks, “Let's relax and try playing it naturally.” This uncompromising approach paid off: Hanks rediscovered the character and adjusted his performance, creating the acclaimed portrayal that won him the Academy Award for Best Actor. Long-term collaboration allows Zemeckis to draw out performances with a deep understanding of each actor's qualities, bringing consistency to the tone and polish of the whole film.
