The Moon Has Risen: A Hidden Masterpiece Directed by Kinuyo Tanaka

The Challenge of Japan's First Female Director

Kinuyo Tanaka (1909–1977) entered Japanese film history as its first female director. After appearing in numerous classics as an actress, she made her directing debut with Love Letter in 1953. To understand the essence of her directing, however, we need to look at her second film, The Moon Has Risen (1955). Following her debut's success, it deepened her own cinematic language. Although unfortunately less well known than Love Letter, it can be called a masterpiece in which her directorial talent appears in its purest form.

A Female Perspective Ahead of Its Time

Set in the late Edo period, The Moon Has Risen depicts the tragic love between courtesan Otsuta (Isuzu Yamada) and doctor Iori Maeda (Masayuki Mori). Based on Yasushi Inoue's novel of the same name, Tanaka elevated the story of lovers separated by social status beyond tragic romance into a profound human drama questioning women's lives in feudal society.

Particularly notable is its innovative narration from the perspective of a courtesan, among the women placed lowest in society at the time. Many male directors depicted courtesans, often as objects of a male gaze, whereas Tanaka carefully portrayed their inner lives, dignity, and pride. The new perspective of a woman filming women is the film's defining feature and remains progressive even today.

Harmony Between Delicate Direction and Production Design

Above all, Tanaka's direction in The Moon Has Risen is characterized by delicate psychological portrayal. Giving meaning to every expression of lead actress Isuzu Yamada, she successfully conveys emotions that cannot be spoken. Particularly memorable is Otsuta looking up at the moon through a window on a snowy night. Complex, inexpressible feelings in which resignation and hope intersect are conveyed quietly.

Tanaka's attention also appears in production design and costumes. Carefully recreating an Edo-period pleasure district from historical evidence, she avoids excessive decoration and makes the space reflect the characters' psychological states. Color is symbolic, with changes in Otsuta's kimono colors corresponding to emotional changes. These visual expressions can be seen as Tanaka's own development of aesthetics learned from Kenji Mizoguchi and Yasujiro Ozu as an actress.

Universal Themes That Resonate Today

The Moon Has Risen retains its appeal through universal themes. A woman trying to remain true to her heart despite social institutions and conventions evokes empathy across eras and cultures. Quietly yet powerfully, without preaching, Tanaka conveyed the value of women taking agency over their own lives.

Tanaka directed six films, and The Moon Has Risen arguably expresses her philosophy most purely. Perfectly balancing her sensitivity as an actress with her directorial perspective, it speaks to us not only through the historical significance of Japan's first female director but as an aesthetic achievement by an individual artist. This hidden gem in Japanese film history deserves reassessment from a contemporary perspective.
