Understanding White Balance and Using It Creatively
The Basics of White Balance
White balance is an important concept in digital cameras and video equipment. It adjusts the color temperature of images and video to reproduce natural colors as the human eye perceives them. Our eyes can recognize a white object as white under a variety of light sources, but cameras cannot do this in the same way. Adjusting white balance enables natural color reproduction without color casts under different light sources, including sunlight, fluorescent lighting, and incandescent lighting.
White Balance Techniques and Settings
Many cameras offer presets such as Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent, and Incandescent. For more accurate adjustment, white balance can also be set manually using a gray card or white-balance card. Advances in digital processing also allow white balance to be adjusted when editing RAW files after the shoot. Fine adjustments to color temperature in kelvin and tint along the green-magenta axis enable more precise color control.
Creative Uses of White Balance
White balance can be used not only for accurate color reproduction but also as a tool for creative expression. Deliberately using an "incorrect" white-balance setting can convey a distinctive mood or emotion. For example, using the Fluorescent setting under a warm light source can create a cool, unreal atmosphere. Conversely, using the Incandescent setting under blue light creates a warm, orange atmosphere. These techniques are frequently used in film and art photography to heighten emotional effects. Creatively manipulating white balance can add a new dimension to visual storytelling.
