What Is a Matte Box? How It Differs from Lens Hoods and Filters and How to Use It on Set

A matte box is a piece of equipment used in photography and video production. Although beginners may not be familiar with it, it is an important accessory for improving image quality. Here, we explain what a matte box does and how it differs from filters and lens hoods.

What Is a Matte Box?

A matte box is a square, hood-like device attached in front of a camera lens to physically block unwanted light from entering. This prevents flare and reflections, helping keep images clear. It also allows multiple filters, such as ND and polarizing filters, to be used together, and its filter holders enable quick changes. The simple drop-in method of changing filters is particularly easy for beginners to use.

How It Differs from Filters and Lens Hoods

Filters screw directly onto a lens to adjust the amount or color of light, but stacking several can be cumbersome. A matte box makes it easy to combine and quickly swap these filters, which is especially useful when filters need to be changed frequently during filming. Matte boxes can efficiently accommodate not only ND filters but also special-effect filters, such as black mist filters.

A lens hood is an accessory fitted to the front of a lens to block incoming light, but its shading coverage is limited. With wide-angle lenses in particular, a hood may not completely prevent flare. A matte box uses French flags, adjustable light-blocking panels, to control incoming light more flexibly over a wider area, enabling more precise shading than a lens hood.

When Do You Need a Matte Box?

The effect of a matte box is particularly noticeable outdoors or in environments with strong light sources. It protects the lens from sunlight or powerful studio lighting, keeping images clear by preventing flare and reflections. Built-in filter holders also allow ND and color-correction filters to be changed quickly while shooting, maintaining the pace of production.

A matte box is especially effective when using multiple filters or shooting in challenging lighting conditions, making it an important accessory even for beginners seeking professional results.
