What Is Video Enhancement?
Technology that improves low-quality video plays an essential role in production. It is used to restore old footage and improve the quality of videos recorded on smartphones. Here, we explain the basic principles behind it.
Super-Resolution
One leading approach is super-resolution, which generates a higher-resolution version by estimating detail from lower-resolution footage. It can be used, for example, to turn 720p video into 1080p.
Deep Learning and ESRGAN
Super-resolution can use deep learning, a form of artificial intelligence that learns visual features from large datasets and uses them to generate higher-quality images. One well-known approach is ESRGAN, which can produce more natural, sharper results. It learns the differences between original and high-resolution images and prioritizes visual appearance when performing the conversion.
Video Super-Resolution (VSR)
Video super-resolution, or VSR, uses multiple frames to reconstruct footage more smoothly. It considers motion between neighboring frames to increase resolution while maintaining visual consistency. This helps the sequence as a whole look natural, making the technique particularly useful for films and television dramas.
