AI and Interactive Film: Perspectives for Planning Video in the Generative AI Era

Will AI Decide a Film's Ending? The Next Evolution of Interactive Film

Films and television dramas have long been enjoyed as one-way experiences in which we receive a story. Advances in technology, however, have brought us interactive films, which allow viewers to participate in the narrative and determine its course themselves. Until now, most interactive films have offered predetermined choices that lead to different endings. As the next step in their evolution, attention is turning to technology that uses AI to analyze viewers' reactions and emotions and dynamically change a film's ending.

The Evolution of Interactive Film

The basic mechanism of an interactive film gives viewers choices partway through the story, with different developments and endings prepared for each option. Netflix's Black Mirror: Bandersnatch is a leading example. Its story follows the route chosen by the viewer, attracting attention for offering a different experience on each viewing.

Current interactive films, however, remain passive in the sense that viewers can only choose from options prepared in advance. The limited options mean that they offer relatively little freedom. This is why the next generation of interactive films using AI is attracting attention. AI can develop a story in real time based on viewers' emotions and reactions, creating an individual film experience tailored to each viewer.

The Benefits of AI

Interactive films using AI offer new attractions that conventional films cannot provide. The feeling of deciding how a story unfolds increases immersion in the entertainment while strengthening viewers' sense of responsibility for, and emotional connection to, the narrative. With AI choosing the ending, viewers can experience multiple endings in a single viewing, improving replayability and expanding the ways they enjoy films and dramas.

A personalized film experience can also provide a special story tailored to each viewer, enabling audiences to become more deeply emotionally involved in the work. In this way, film evolves from simple entertainment into an experiential medium for individual viewers. As AI continues to learn audience preferences and reactions, even more accurate, individualized experiences should become possible.

Challenges and Concerns

Although there are many benefits to letting AI determine a film's ending, there are also challenges and concerns. First, technology that collects viewer data and changes the story accordingly could raise privacy issues. How viewers' emotional data and reactions are handled and stored must be managed carefully from a data protection perspective.

Automatically generating stories with AI also raises concerns that filmmakers' and screenwriters' creativity may be lost. In AI-led films, the screenwriter's traditional role of designing the entire narrative could diminish. How filmmaking can retain human sensibility and passion will be a challenge for the future.

The Future of Interactive Film

Interactive films using AI have the potential to become a major form of entertainment. As AI becomes involved in every stage of filmmaking, narrative freedom will increase dramatically, ushering in an era when original stories tailored to each viewer are delivered in real time.

Combining AI with VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) will make film experiences even more immersive. We can look forward to a future of interactive films in which viewers enter the story and advance it through direct conversations with the characters.
