The Founding of ARRI: A Visual Revolution Beginning in the Film Era
ARRI (Arnold & Richter) was founded in Munich, Germany, in 1924 and has played an important role in film history. Its founders, August Arnold and Robert Richter, aimed to break through the limits of filmmaking technology and open new possibilities for visual expression. ARRI's history represents not merely the evolution of an equipment manufacturer but innovation in filmmaking technology itself.
The 1920s were the era of silent cinema, with technology advancing rapidly. Arnold and Richter focused on the evolution of filmmaking equipment and began developing cameras and other production equipment themselves. Although they started as a small repair workshop, their passion grew it into a company supporting filmmaking as a whole. They were not simply technicians but visionaries looking toward cinema's future.
Early Products and Film Technology
One of ARRI's early products was the ARRIFLEX 35 camera. Introduced in 1937, it revolutionized the film industry as the world's first practical single-lens-reflex motion-picture camera. The reflex system allowed directors and cinematographers to see the subject directly through the viewfinder, enabling precise framing. The ARRIFLEX 35 was also lightweight and mobile, making it suitable for location filming.
This innovation earned ARRI high regard on film sets worldwide and established its position as a standard in motion-picture cameras. In addition to developing cameras, ARRI supplied lighting and other production equipment, building a comprehensive solution for filmmaking.
ARRI's Influence
ARRI's technology greatly enhanced cinema's expressive power. From the 1930s through the 1950s, its cameras and equipment were used in many classic films, giving directors new freedom of visual expression. During the Second World War, ARRI cameras were also used for news footage and wartime documentaries, playing an important role in recording historic moments.
