The Nature of Realism Through Evolving Video Technology and Human Perception
The Remarkable Evolution of Video Technology
In recent years, video technology has advanced at a remarkable pace. High resolutions such as 4K and 8K, 3D imagery, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and other once-unimaginable technologies are becoming practical one after another. They blur the boundaries of what we perceive as reality and sometimes even provide experiences that feel more real than the physical world. With the latest VR, for example, users can experience being present in a place while physically far away. Such technological advances pose the fundamental question of what reality is.
Human Cognitive Mechanisms and the Construction of Reality
Looking at human cognition, meanwhile, reveals that what we experience as reality is actually a subjective interpretation constructed by the brain. The brain integrates information from the senses and combines it with past experiences, memories, and predictions to reconstruct reality. Errors such as illusions and illusion-like experiences can also arise in this process. Optical illusions and auditory hallucinations, for example, illustrate how subjective the brain's interpretive processes are. In other words, the reality we experience daily might be described not as objective reality itself but as a kind of virtual reality created by the brain.
New Realities Through the Fusion of Technology and Cognition
As video technology advances and understanding of human cognition deepens, the concept of reality itself is changing. Video generation using the latest AI and the development of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) further blur the boundary between physical and virtual reality. Deepfake technology, for example, can create footage of nonexistent people so realistic that it is indistinguishable from the real thing. Advances in BCIs are also beginning to make it possible to control virtual spaces through thought alone. These technologies hold the potential to overturn the definition of real fundamentally. How should we define reality and engage with it in the future? In an era of new realities created by the fusion of technology and human cognition, this question will become increasingly important.
