Lessons from Hayao Miyazaki's Major Works: Applying Imagination to Video Production

Hayao Miyazaki, a Master of Animation

アニメーション界の巨匠、宮崎駿

Director Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most influential figures in Japanese animation. Born in Tokyo on January 5, 1941, the Studio Ghibli cofounder has created many masterpieces loved around the world. Characterized by rich imagination, meticulous drawing, and profound messages, his films are valued as works of art that go beyond mere entertainment. Passionate about drawing since childhood, Miyazaki began his career at Toei Doga, now Toei Animation. He subsequently worked alongside director Isao Takahata and founded Studio Ghibli in 1985, opening up new possibilities for animated films.

Early Success and International Recognition

初期の成功と国際的評価の獲得

Miyazaki's first feature as director was Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro in 1979. His talent already shone in that film, and he followed it with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind in 1984. Its success paved the way for Studio Ghibli's establishment. The 1988 releases My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies, the latter directed by Isao Takahata, marked a turning point in bringing Ghibli's name to the world. Totoro in particular became the studio's symbol and is beloved worldwide. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989) also received high praise in Japan and abroad, establishing Miyazaki's international standing. Porco Rosso (1992) further expanded his expressive range by incorporating themes for adults.

Defining Works of a Golden Age and the Pursuit of Artistry

Princess Mononoke (1997) saw Miyazaki's artistic identity blossom further and broke domestic box office records. Its grand-scale portrayal of coexistence between nature and humanity attracted considerable international attention. Released in 2001, Spirited Away is considered one of the peaks of his career. It received numerous international honors, including the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival and Best Animated Feature at the 75th Academy Awards. Holding Japan's box office record for many years, it became an enduring masterpiece loved around the world.

Howl's Moving Castle (2004) also received high praise, including the Osella Award at the Venice International Film Festival. With Ponyo (2008), he remained committed to hand-drawn animation and continued new challenges, including the depiction of water.

Retirement, Return, and a Lasting Legacy

引退と復帰、そして残された遺産

In 2013, Miyazaki announced his retirement from feature animation upon completing The Wind Rises. The film, which also contains autobiographical elements, drew a major response as a culmination of his work. In 2017, however, while making the short Boro the Caterpillar, he conceived a new feature and returned to filmmaking with The Boy and the Heron (2023).

Hayao Miyazaki's films are praised worldwide as masterpieces that transcend the framework of animated cinema, combining artistry and entertainment at a high level. His talent for depicting universal themes such as environmental issues, peace, growth, and love through his distinctive aesthetics and imagination has had an immeasurable influence on animation history. Studio Ghibli's body of work will continue to move many people as an important part of Japanese culture and as art with a lasting place in world film history.
