Neon Genesis Evangelion, which began airing on the TV Tokyo network in October 1995, opened a new chapter in Japanese animation history. At first glance a conventional giant-robot anime, it was in substance a weighty story exploring deep psychological issues such as loneliness, alienation, and trauma. Through protagonist Shinji Ikari's conflicts, director Hideaki Anno questioned the very nature of human existence in contemporary society. Flashbacks, montage expressing streams of consciousness, and abstract depictions of inner worlds introduce abundant visual grammar absent from conventional anime. From episode sixteen onward, the psychological conflicts of the three principal characters—Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu—are depicted vividly, shifting the focus from a hero's story toward an exploration of human existence.
The Turning Point: The Shock of the Final Episodes Becomes a Social Phenomenon
Evangelion truly became a social phenomenon in early 1996 as the broadcast approached its conclusion. Shinji's awakening in episode nineteen, 'A Man's Battle,' and the thorough exploration of inner life in episode twenty, 'Shape of the Heart, Shape of the Human,' shocked viewers. The narrative through episode twenty-four and the extremely experimental expression of the final two episodes, twenty-five and twenty-six, both bewildered many viewers and generated passionate debate about the work's meaning. This developed beyond evaluation of an anime into philosophical discussion of contemporary identity and society itself. During this period, Evangelion came to be positioned as a precursor to a new genre called sekai-kei, with influence extending into music, fashion, literature, and other fields.
The Story's Fruition: A Journey of Endless Recreation
Even after the television series ended, Evangelion continued to be recreated without end. The 1997 theatrical versions Air / A Pure Heart for You and THE END OF EVANGELION presented an ending different from television and sparked fresh controversy. Beginning in 2007, the Rebuild of Evangelion series became a culmination of Anno's creative philosophy as a reconstruction extending beyond a remake. Having evolved for more than a quarter-century, Evangelion can be described as a contemporary myth beyond simple content. At its core is the journey of a creator, Hideaki Anno, continually confronting his inner life sincerely, and simultaneously an endless dialogue in which viewers keep asking who they are. It remains a remarkable cultural phenomenon that not only expanded animation's possibilities but became a mirror of the contemporary human psyche.
