1926年、東京府北豊島郡滝野川町（現・東京都北区）に生まれた中平康は、芸術を奨励される環境で育ちました。父は洋画家の高橋虎之助、母はバイオリニストという芸術家の家庭に育った中平は、母方の姓を継いでいます。幼少期より映画に熱中し、中学生時代にはルネ・クレール監督の作品などを何度も繰り返し観て映像表現を研究したといいます。

1950年代半ば、保守的だった日本映画界に新たな風を吹き込んだのが中平康（1926-1978）でした。日活の助監督から頭角を現した彼は、1956年の『狂った果実』で鮮烈なデビューを飾ります。石原慎太郎の原作を映画化したこの作品で、中平はそれまでの日本映画にはなかったスピーディーなテンポと洗練された映像センスを披露し、戦後社会に台頭した「太陽族」と呼ばれる若者たちの奔放な生態をリアルに描き出しました。
