The Birth and Development of Self-Referential Expression
Since cinema began, filmmakers have continually sought new forms of expression. Among them, self-referential expression, which deliberately reveals a work’s own structure or production process, has been an important part of moving-image art from the mid-20th century to the present. The French New Wave of the 1960s was a pioneer. Jean-Luc Godard’s Breathless (1960) includes a scene in which the protagonist looks directly at the camera and addresses the audience, attracting attention as an attempt to break conventional cinematic frameworks. In the 1970s, experimental filmmakers such as Hollis Frampton and Michael Snow made works that drew attention to film’s material nature and the projector’s presence. Many works took the moving-image medium itself as their subject. From the 1980s into the 1990s, digital technology expanded the possibilities further. Peter Greenaway’s Prospero’s Books (1991) explored the multilayered nature of images using multiscreen techniques that displayed several images simultaneously.
Combining Contemporary Self-Referential Expression with Technology
In the 21st century, the spread of the internet and social media made self-referential expression part of everyday life. Miranda July’s Between You and Me (2011) used online communication to blur the boundary between reality and the virtual. Advances in VR and AR are now bringing it into a new phase. Audiences themselves can become part of a work and manipulate visual space in real time. For example, Chris Milk’s Evolving World (2018) is an innovative work in which images change in response to viewers’ movements within VR space. Advances in AI and blockchain are expected to enable still more complex and interactive self-referential expression. Possibilities include narratives that change in real time according to audience reactions and choices, or collective visual experiences created jointly by multiple viewers.
The Future and Challenges of Self-Referential Expression
Looking ahead, advances in neuroscience have also prompted research into generating images by directly reading brainwaves, raising the possibility of thought itself becoming a medium for visual expression. This could produce entirely new forms of self-reference beyond conventional ideas of moving images. Technological progress will also raise issues of privacy, copyright, and ethics, however. Filmmakers will pursue new expressive possibilities while confronting these challenges. As technology makes self-referential techniques easier to use, their essential meaning and effect may also weaken. Self-referential expression is an important method of continuing to question the nature of moving-image media. It will likely keep opening new horizons in response to technological advances and social change. At the same time, even in the digital era, the importance of analog methods and self-reference attentive to materiality may be rediscovered. Filmmakers will be called on to combine old and new technologies and approaches to create fresh self-referential expression that unsettles audience awareness.
