GoPro is an action camera brand founded by Nick Woodman in 2002. The idea grew out of a surfing trip to Australia, where he wanted to capture his friends' activities with the quality of professional footage. At the time, few affordable cameras combined waterproofing with impact resistance, so he decided to develop a product himself.
Funding and the First Product
To raise initial funding, Woodman sold shell necklaces in California that he had purchased in Bali. He raised about $10,000 this way and received a further loan of approximately $250,000 from his parents to develop the product. The first GoPro HERO, released in 2004, was a waterproof 35 mm film camera designed for surfing and other outdoor activities. It quickly gained popularity among action sports enthusiasts.
GoPro's Vision and Evolution
GoPro's vision is a world where anyone can easily record their adventures and create professional-looking footage. Woodman's goal was to make high-quality filming accessible to amateurs. The products continued to evolve, with a model capable of recording digital video arriving in 2006. Through the development of accessories and software, GoPro grew from a camera manufacturer into a platform supporting video creation.
Today, GoPro is used beyond action sports, including travel, documentaries, and filmmaking. Recent models offer 4K and 360-degree recording, helping drive innovation in video production. GoPro's innovative, user-friendly design has helped make professional-looking footage accessible to everyone.
