The Beginning of a Dream: Walt Disney's Origins
Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois. Passionate about drawing from childhood, he eventually began looking for a way to put his talent to use. In his late teens, he worked on cartoon advertisements at a newspaper, where he became fascinated by animation. After World War I, Walt returned home and founded a small animation production company called Laugh-O-Gram with his brother Roy. This was a modest first step toward what would become a vast entertainment empire.
Overcoming Setbacks: Taking on Hollywood
However, Laugh-O-Gram fell into financial difficulty, and Walt experienced bankruptcy. Undeterred by this setback, he set out for Hollywood, California, in search of a fresh start. In 1923, with his brother Roy's support, he established the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio. He gradually became known through works such as the Alice Comedies series and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Yet he also suffered the bitter experience of losing the copyright to Oswald. This event made Walt acutely aware of the importance of owning his company's characters.
A Turning Point in Destiny: The Birth of Mickey Mouse
In 1928, Walt created a new character: Mickey Mouse, who would later be loved around the world. The first film, Steamboat Willie, was a huge hit as the first animation with fully synchronized sound. Mickey Mouse's popularity spread rapidly worldwide, and he became Disney's signature character. Building on this success, the company released one innovative feature-length animated film after another, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia. Disney had become a leader at the forefront of animation.
A Dream Realized: Disneyland Opens
After finding success in filmmaking, Walt held an even bigger dream: to create a place that adults and children could enjoy together. On July 17, 1955, that dream became reality in Anaheim, California, with the opening of Disneyland. Unprecedented in its scale and offerings for the time, the theme park faced many problems initially but soon captured people's hearts and became a major success. Walt Disney died in 1966, but the foundation he built continued to develop. Across many areas of entertainment, including film, theme parks, television, and music, Disney became a world leader.
