Childhood in Oita: Discovering Moving Images

Born in Oita Prefecture in 1960, Takahisa Zeze was captivated by moving images from an early age. The films he saw at local cinemas left deep impressions on him. In high school in particular, he joined the film club and tried his first independent production with an 8mm camera. His distinctive sharp perspective and sensitive sensibility are said to have been emerging already. Despite the limitations of a regional city, the young Zeze eagerly absorbed films of every kind and explored the possibilities of visual expression.

Studies at Kyoto University and a Passion for Film

Leaving Oita to enter Kyoto University's Faculty of Letters, Zeze gained an opportunity to study art and culture from a wider perspective. While studying literature and philosophy, he also energetically pursued independent filmmaking. The short films he made during this period were highly regarded within and beyond the university for their innovative direction and distinctive aesthetics. Through film society activities, he also encountered acclaimed works from around the world, refining his own cinematic language. His university friendships and grounding in the humanities would become valuable resources in his later film career.

After Graduation: A Direct Step into Cinema

After graduating from Kyoto University's Faculty of Letters, Zeze entered the film world without hesitation. Rather than choosing the stability of a conventional company job, he decided to pursue the filmmaking to which he had devoted his passion. Beginning to gain on-set experience as an assistant director from the outset, he learned everything from filmmaking fundamentals to practical skills in production. His university knowledge of literature and philosophy became a foundation that gave depth to his work in the artistic medium of film. Even while being tested by the harsh realities of production, Zeze never let go of the visual expression he wanted to pursue.

The Assistant Director Years and His Directorial Debut

Having entered film production, Zeze accumulated experience as an assistant director under well-known directors. Despite a demanding apprenticeship, his talent and effort gradually gained recognition within the industry. After many years as an assistant, he finally debuted with his own directed film. It was around this time that the name Takahisa Zeze became known among film fans. The distinctive world and directing style already visible in his early works brought a fresh voice to Japanese cinema and led to his later richly individual films. After many twists and turns, Zeze had finally taken his first step as a filmmaker telling stories in his own visual language.
